Most companies selling custom packaging in New York don't actually make it. They take your dimensions, forward them to a plant they've never walked through, and spend the rest of the job managing the distance between what you approved and what comes off the truck. VSL Packaging works the other way around. We're a packaging company that owns the job it sells. Our design desk and prototyping bench sit at 239 West 29th Street, Ground Floor, in Manhattan's Garment District, and we specify, proof, and supervise the press and finishing work that turns your dieline into a finished box, produced to our standard in New York City.
That's the thing worth knowing before anything else on this site. When we quote a box, we're quoting a job we control — our dieline, our board call, our press schedule, our people. If a structure needs to change, we make the change ourselves. Nobody is relaying your revision through a broker to a factory on the other side of an ocean and a language barrier.
A custom packaging job at VSL moves through one continuous process rather than a chain of vendors. It starts with structural and graphic design — we draw dielines around your product instead of forcing your product into a stock template. From that dieline we build a photorealistic 3D rendering so you can judge color, finish, and proportion on screen, then cut a physical prototype you can hold, fold, load, and hand around a conference table. A rendering can't tell you whether a lid seats flush or a handle tears under weight. A prototype can.
Once the structure is approved, we proof it and carry it through print and finishing as one continuous process. Our finishing work covers embossing and debossing, foil stamping, spot UV, matte, gloss, and satin coatings, and soft-touch lamination — often combined on a single piece, always proofed before a production run commits. Then it goes to production and out the door. Same team, start to finish.
VSL Packaging is the packaging arm of a New York print family, from the team behind VSL Print — formally Varick Street Litho — the Manhattan commercial printer that shares our West 29th Street address and appeared on CNBC's The Profit. VSL Print handles catalogs, signage, and large-format commercial work; we handle everything that wraps, holds, protects, or ships a product.
That shared history is why our packaging capabilities lean so heavily on print craft. Color discipline, ink behavior on difficult substrates, and finishing that survives a real production run are printing problems before they're packaging problems, and they've been the family trade for a long time.
We build for brands whose packaging has to do a specific job rather than a generic one. That spans roughly two dozen industries — apparel and footwear, beauty and cosmetics, beverages, food, jewelry and luxury goods, CBD and nutraceuticals, electronics, medical and pharmaceutical, pet care, home goods, sporting goods, industrial, and retail. Each brings constraints the structure has to answer: moisture barriers, crush resistance, child-resistant closures, tamper evidence, shelf-depth limits.
Over the years that work has included packaging produced for Belvedere, Google, IBM, Betty Booze, Bored Cow, and Charlie Fox, alongside a long list of first-run boxes for startups nobody has heard of yet. Both matter to us. A national beverage rollout and a five-hundred-unit launch go through the same prototyping step.
If you know roughly what you're packaging but not what it should be, request a quote and tell us the product, the quantity, and where it needs to go. A project manager reviews every request and follows up within one business day.
If you'd rather design your own custom box first, build it in the VSL Packaging Studio — choose material, style, size, and finish, watch it render in 3D, and send the finished spec straight to our engineers.
